Oliver Ryan

Workshop: Milpera Live! A teacher-led, online program for Year 5-9 EAL/D Students

I’m Oliver and I’ve been teaching EAL/D English at Milpera SHS for about 10 years. Milpera SHS is a school for refugees and migrants who are able to undertake an extensive English language and settlement program to prepare themselves to transition to mainstream high schools or TAFE. During my time at Milpera we have developed and set up a Coding program to better introduce our students to the ICT skills they will need at mainstream high schools. We use Lego WeDo 2.0, Scratch Jr and Scratch to help introduce coding. When COVID forced the closure of international borders, we investigated ways to bring EAL/D pedagogy to refugee and migrant students in other schools across Queensland. With the help of the IMPACT Centre we initially trialled and set up an online program for EAL/D students. In the past 18 months, we have been using iSee and its 3D environment to bring EAL/D support to students from places such as Townsville, Emerald and Brisbane.
